January Athlete of the Month - Candace Tallisman

Meet our January Athlete of the Month, Candace Tallisman!! Candace was voted by her peers (woohoo!) to be our Athlete of the Month this month. Her enthusiasm for CrossFit, her dedication to her workouts, and her postive attitude in class make her the top choice by her fellow athletes to be our Athlete of the Month. Above all, coaches and athletes agree that Candace embodies what CrossFit is all about - she helps build our amazing community by being a role model and encouraging others to reach their potential. For these reasons and many more, we are both proud and excited to have Candace be our athlete of the month. To learn more about this incredible woman, read below!

Your story. Who are you? What do you do when you are not here (job, school, etc)? Past athletic history.

My name is Candace Tallisman, I'm 25 (minus 10), wife and mother of two beautiful and crazy kids.  Prior to kids, I spent 10 years in corporate sales, dabbled in real estate but choose to stay home with the kiddos and also spend time working on marketing at one of my favorite places, CrossFit Lake Forest.  Outside of the gym, I'm typically running around with or for the kids and making four course meals for my husband!  My past athletic history consists of mainly swimming and (prior to CrossFit) going to spinning and other group exercise classes.

Why CrossFit?? How did you find CrossFit Lake Forest?

I can remember about 5 years ago stumbling across the CrossFit Games on ESPN2 and seeing Josh Bridges on tv.  I went to high school with him and also spent the summer's lifeguarding with him as well, and was blown away at how this scrawny boy had evolved into this beast of a man!  That was the first time that I had ever caught wind of CrossFit.  From there I was always intrigued, but very intimidated.  I was then pregnant with my second baby and kept running into a friend of a friend and she seriously wouldn't stop talking to me about CrossFit!  We then moved to Bannockburn, and it was then when I drove by the Sunset Plaza, I decided when my son was 3 months old, I would start going to CrossFit Lake Forest!  After that, the rest was history!

What do you love about CrossFit Lake Forest?

I could write a short novel on this, but on a larger scale why I love CrossFit is because I do feel it's changing the face of the "perfect body" for females.  I believe it's giving women confidence in their body and helping them find strength physically and mentally.  For me, after finding CrossFit I set my goals around performance and not around weight or body image.  My husband will often make comments, that he thinks "my wings" are getting too big, and I can't help to smile because that must mean my muscles are getting bigger!  I think it's pretty phenomenal that at a CrossFit Box women are applauded and "looked up to" when they can lift a lot of weight or do pull-ups and it has nothing to do with how skinny or pretty, or great their workout outfit is which you typically find at other gyms.

In terms of CrossFit Lake Forest, I love the community!  I can still remember walking in for my first class and being scared to death and there was Peggy.  She made me feel so comfortable and I'll never forget being introduced to the class.  I can also say that this community inspires me so much.  It is so amazing to see parents and kids, brother and sisters, husbands and wives working out together and taking their health so seriously.

Favorite workout? Least favorite?

I love, love, love rope climbs and don't mind chippers.  I used to despise thrusters after a very horrid workout that I still have nightmares about, but they are getting better.

Goals or things your working on.

The majority of all of my goals can be summed up to getting stronger and lifting heavier!  I'm also contemplating a Spartan Race this year but haven't committed just yet:)

One piece of advice about CrossFit, life, anything!!

"Just keep moving"!  This saying is going on in my head all the time, and just like in Nemo, it has Ellen's voice of "just keep swimming, just keep swimming".  But in all seriousness, I'm saying this to myself when I want to quit a workout, and even when life throws me a curve ball.  Just keep moving!
