February Athlete of the Month - Mike Cushing

Your story. Who are you?


I am the father of three amazing boys Jack (11) Roc (10) and Ben (7), and extremely lucky to be married to my wife Laura.


What do you do when you are not here (job,school, etc)? 


During the work week I spend a lot of time at a desk or in court.  I’m a personal injury attorney, so I help people who have been injured in accidents.  When I’m not at work I can be found at a hockey rink, a cross country meet, out hiking on a trail or somewhere watchingmy kids have fun.       


Past athletic history?


Sports and athletics have always been a part of my life.  Growing up and throughout high school I played football, basketball, and even wrestled a little, but my main sport was always baseball.  I play a little tennis and paddle and enjoy golfing when time permits.  My wife is an avid runner and convinced me to run a couple marathons with her, but I will never do that again.    


Why CrossFit?


I wanted to get back in shape and was looking for a challenge.


How did you find CrossFit Lake Forest?


Kind of on accident. I saw it when I was with my family over at Bernie’s Book Bank. 


What do you love about CrossFit Lake Forest?


The athletes and coaches I have met are fantastic.  Their encouragement and support keeps me motivated.


Favorite workout?


Hands Down Burpees Box Jump Overs.  Aren’t they everyone’s? 


Least favorite?


I don’t really have a least favorite, but recently when I wake up at 5 a.m. the thought of doing high wallball reps makes me to think hard about going back to bed.  


Goals or things you’re working on?


My goal is to keep getting better at everything.  I’d love to figure out double unders.  They seem easy in theory…
