October Athlete of the Month - Paul Gotta

Your story. Who are you? What do you do when you are not here (job, school, etc)?

I was born and raised in Kenosha, Wisconsin (yep, I’m a cheese head). I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received a degree in civil/structural engineering.    I am currently president of a design/construction company that builds multi-family residential housing and some commercial building. I am married to Reenee and have a daughter named Kate. We moved to Lake Forest five years ago from the City.  For fun I play paddle-tennis and believe it or not enjoy lawn care / planting.

Past athletic history?

Growing up I was really into sports, all seasons 24/7.  I played organized club hockey and tennis

Why CrossFit?

How did you find CrossFit Lake Forest? I was introduced to Crossfit by Mike Garner. Reenee and I were looking for something beside the rec center (ugh) and /or traditional health clubs. Once we tried Crossfit we were hooked. I’m in the best shape of my life because of Crossfit. I think Crossfit will prolong my quality of life and will allow me to ski, play paddle, etc.

What do you love about CrossFit Lake Forest?

I love the coaches and the camaraderie between all of the athletes. My best friends in the Lake Forest area are all my Crossfit peeps. I also look forward to starting my day with the 6:30 AM class.

Favorite workout? Least favorite?

Favorite workout is any chipper. Specifically, I like wall balls and thrusters. Least favorite workout is any handstand push-up as I’m really lacking in shoulder strength.  It makes me mad that I can’t do them……. ugh, definitely a weakness that I need to conquer. I also despise reverse bear crawls.

Goals or things your working on?

I have two goals for this year; i) handstand push-ups, ii) touch my toes with straight knees (pathetic, right?)---- Rachelle will be so proud of me.

One piece of advice about CrossFit, life, anything!!

CrossFit advice: stay after class 10-15 minutes a day to work on things you can’t do. I couldn’t do DU’s to save my life. Afer 30 days of practice I conquered them with the help of Reenee, Jay and Rachelle. About life:  enjoy everyday you have and appreciate your health.
