Meet our January Athlete of the Month - Mike Maka

Your story. Who are you? What do you do when you are not here (job, school, etc)?

When I’m not doing CrossFit, I’m either at one of my three jobs or spending time with my wife. With my doctorate in clinical psychology, I have been fortunate enough to begin private practice work in Lake Forest, continue to administer neuropsychological assessments, and aid adolescents with emotional and behavioral disturbances at a local therapeutic day school.

Past athletic history?

A bulk of my past was consumed by training and competing in MMA.

Why CrossFit?? How did you find CrossFit Lake Forest?

Oddly enough, I was in opposition for quite some time to even try CrossFit. My misinformed understanding of what CrossFit had to offer did not go away until my wife took me to the Madison CrossFit Games and introduced me to the sport as a whole. I was lucky to have my wife already be a member at CrossFit Lake Forest, which made it all the more easier to find a place to begin.

What do you love about CrossFit Lake Forest?

In honesty, it’s a multitude of different things that all come together during our 5:30a.m. class. I enjoy every interaction with the coaches (Jay, Sarah, Rachelle, and Auste), along with the continuous bickering that I have with my CrossFit buddies (Tevni and Dave), and of course, the motivation to push myself that I get from my wife (Kat).

Goals or things your working on?

I have always been a relatively slim guy, which is why I would like to add a few pounds of muscle.
